Hi John.
Like all Kansans, I horrified by the assassination attempt on former President Trump over the weekend. Political violence of any kind, against former President Trump or anyone else, is never acceptable.
In our country, we must resolve our differences peacefully. That means reasoned debate and compromise – not violence. That is a fundamental pillar of what our democracy should be about.
We can never lose sight of the fact that even when people disagree, we are all fellow human beings who deserve safety, empathy, and respect. Remembering that fact isn’t just important for avoiding further acts of violence. It’s also critical for getting anything done.
I am relieved the former president is doing well and I am thankful to the Secret Service and law enforcement who responded quickly. I am very saddened that one event attendee lost their life as well.
It’s clear this incident represents a serious security breach that requires thorough, independent investigations into what happened. That includes investigations by Congress, which has an important role to play in fulfilling its oversight role. I look forward to learning more from the relevant congressional committees as those inquiries move forward.
I understand tragedies like this can bring forward many strong emotions. It’s a difficult time for many of us right now. Please know that it’s always okay to seek help if you need it.
