Yesterday, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick was on Fox News arguing that Texans’ lives aren’t as important as “re-opening” our economy. He restated his idea that we should just let people die instead of addressing the public health crisis we’re in with a coordinated, science-based response.

We need to be clear about who the Lt. Governor is talking about: working class Texans, people who will have to return to jobs that offer no healthcare, the elderly, and people who are immunocompromised — like my son, Brack.

Brack had his first electrophysiology study at age 6. He’ll be under a cardiologist’s care for the rest of his life.

In high school, he was diagnosed with an immune deficiency and missed nearly three years of school as we bounced from specialist to specialist. It wasn’t until the end of his junior year that we learned that he had what’s called selective IgA deficiency, an immune system condition that means his body doesn’t have enough immunoglobulin A, a protein that fights infection. COVID-19 puts people like my son in serious danger.

Dan Patrick is doubling down on this idea that people like Brack are “acceptable” casualties.

So I’m doubling down as well: We need to reject this false choice of profit or human life.

If large numbers of people have to die in order for our economy to work, our economy isn't working.

We will not endanger ourselves, our families, and our communities, just because career politicians have failed to meet this moment in the way that it demands.

I'm so proud of everything we've accomplished together, even in times as difficult as these. But there's still a lot of work to do. As long as working families are left behind by our democracy, we'll keep up the fight for real change.
