Campaign Legal Center (CLC) condemns the tragic events of this weekend’s deadly shooting in Pennsylvania, and our hearts go out to everyone affected by this horrific act of violence. Our democracy depends on every American rejecting all forms of political violence. Now more than ever, CLC is committed to moving forward with our important work, which includes ensuring respect for the electoral process and the rule of law. Americans must have faith in the fundamental principle that, in a democracy, we should settle our differences at the ballot box. Together, we can ensure safe and secure elections for all.

Utah voters got a big win in the fight for fair voting maps after a unanimous ruling by the Utah Supreme Court. In 2018, voters passed a bipartisan citizen initiative called Proposition 4 (Prop 4), also known as Better Boundaries. This initiative banned partisan gerrymandering – the practice of a political party manipulating district lines to give members of their party an unfair advantage in elections – and established the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission.

CLC represents a bipartisan group of Utah voters, as well as the League of Women Voters of Utah and Mormon Women for Ethical Government, and has partnered with Utah attorneys from law firms Parr Brown Gee & Loveless and Zimmerman Booher, in the ongoing lawsuit against Utah’s gerrymandered congressional map and defending the citizen-led Prop 4.

This win brings Utah voters significantly closer to fair maps where every voter has an equal voice. Every Utahn deserves to choose their own politicians, instead of politicians choosing their voters.
