Did You Know? Fun facts about NVFS' 100-year journey

NVFS is celebrating 100 years of service <[link removed]>! Did you know that what would become NVFS, started humbly in Alexandria in 1924 when a group of volunteers recognized their community’s need for food, coats, and coal and acted to help their neighbors’ well-being?

Today, NVFS has a wide array of services to assist individuals and families from across Northern Virginia on their well-being journey. However, all of them are provided with the same spirit of warmth and support to our community.

Summer Fun at NVFS' Arlington Mill Early Head Start Center

Throughout June and July, Arlington Mill Early Head Start Center partnered with local community members to help open a new world of experiences and possibilities to our youngest learners.

* Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA): The welfare league brought the magic of storytelling to life by sharing books with every classroom.
* R.E.A.D of Arlington : R.E.A.D. sat down with the children to delve into books before introducing them introducing their special guest, Dobi the bunny.
* Perfect Pointe Dance Studio : Showcased a dance with the captivated class before inviting the kids up to learn and experience the fun of dance themselves.
* American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) : Ignited excitement through thrilling books and got everyone up on their feet moving.

Thank you to all the local partners who helped to introduce our young learners to the joy of reading, music, dance, animals, and movement, as well as creating lasting memories.

Early Head Start aids pregnant women and parents of children between the ages of 0 and 3 to develop a path to a brighter future. Learn more on our website <[link removed]>.

NVFS Spotlighted in the 3-Degree Guarantee

A bit of weather-related fun is getting a community-support make-over with Good Morning Washington’s 3-Degree Guarantee <[link removed]> and F.H. Furr.

If Saturday’s high is within 3-degrees of ABC 7 First Alert Weather forecast, then F.H. Furr will donate $ 100 to NVFS through September!

Thank you F.H. Furr for this cool way of supporting your community even while summer temperatures rise. And, we believe in you, ABC7 meteorologists! You got this!

Volunteer Spotlight: Clock Tower Thrift Shop Volunteers

We’d like to give a few shout outs to some Clock Tower Thrift Shop <[link removed]> volunteers that have gone above and beyond.

First, thank you Kirsten Singer and Gina Mobley , for bridging our NVFS program-to-program donation gap. Kirsten, who volunteers both at the Head Start Center and Clock Tower Thrift Shop, collected and donated shelf-stable food, infant and toddler care item, clothing and gear as well as large amounts of feminine hygiene products, which was much needed at NVFS’ SERVE Family Shelter and Hunger Resource Center. Kirsten met Gina, SERVE Shelter volunteer extraordinaire, and handed off this carload of donations to make sure they got to our shelter guests and HRC clients.

Secondly, a special thanks to Team EY , for helping our Training Futures trainees prepare for their new careers with clothing they needed so they could dress to impress! Team EY went through the Clock Tower Thrift Shop's Training Futures Clothes Closet, curating outfits that would help make sure the trainees were outfitted professionally and interview ready. Thank you, Team EY, and all of neighbors whose donations of gently-loved professional wear goes to help our neighbors take the next step in their career.

Third, dedicated volunteer groups Exostar and Forvis helped count all donations at the Clock Tower Thrift Shop for our essential year-end audit requirement.

And, finally, a big thank YOU to all our Clock Tower Thrift Shop donors and shoppers because the proceeds from our thrift shop go to help NVFS and our community.
