Today marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Over the past 50 years, and even in the past few months, the world has changed so much.

We’re hurtling toward climate disaster, and Trump and his corporate cronies are taking every opportunity they can to dismantle hard-fought environmental protections, destroy our public lands and waters, and accelerate mass extinction... just so they can profit at our expense.

Clearly, our work is more needed than ever before. Friends of the Earth has been working overtime to fight for people and our planet -- before it’s too late. But we can’t do it without you. To keep up the fight, we urgently need to raise $21,000 by midnight tonight. That’s why we need YOU to donate as generously as you can today. Can you help us meet our goal?

Please, John, make a special Earth Day donation of $27 or more by midnight. Donate now and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact!

The facts are sobering. This past year has been the worst-ever for scores of species -- including bees and monarch butterflies -- as well as record temperatures leading to unprecedented ice melt and habitat loss.

For example, Greenland, known for its glaciers, shocked scientists last year when its ice sheet melted at a rate not expected for another 50 years -- which means catastrophic sea level rise is coming at a quicker rate than many climate models predicted, too. And because ice is so good at reflecting sunlight, its loss alone accelerates climate change. Meanwhile, permafrost atop soil is melting rapidly, releasing massive amounts of methane -- a greenhouse gas exponentially stronger than carbon dioxide -- into the air as it does so.

These systems are linked, and they’re getting worse. We don’t have much time left before complete ecological disaster.

Yet amidst all of this and while in a global pandemic, Trump’s Administration is doing the bidding of big polluters and the pesticide industry, speeding up fossil fuel projects and pesticide approvals while the public’s attention is elsewhere. Under the guise of reacting to the coronavirus crisis, they’re deepening inequity and pushing us closer to environmental collapse.

That’s why we’ve ramped up our advocacy this year. We’re not only running our typical crucial campaigns -- including fundamentally shifting our food and energy systems, reforming democracy to ensure more politicians are accountable to the people rather than polluters, protecting our oceans and forests, and more -- but we’re also rapidly responding to new daily threats and our changed global context during COVID-19.

Over the course of our history as an organization, we’ve seen and accomplished a lot together. Founded in 1969, Friends of the Earth U.S. is one year older than Earth Day. And more than any time prior to now, we need your support -- as does our planet.

John, please donate to Friends of the Earth as generously as you can by MIDNIGHT TONIGHT.

With your support, we pick strategic targets and run winning campaigns. We use all the tools in our toolbox, from hard-hitting research that exposes corruption and blocks dangerous policies, to corporate campaigning that disrupts polluters’ actions and holds them accountable, to direct action like getting arrested outside the Supreme Court to send a message that we won’t let the Atlantic Coast Pipeline cut through the iconic Appalachian Trail.

And we’re not just focused on immediate needs or reacting to the bad news of the day. Throughout, we’re organizing to build long-term political power, for a healthy, just, sustainable world. We’re changing the systems at the root cause of our problems, not just addressing the symptoms.

This transformative leadership is thanks to you. With your support, we’ve been able to maintain our independence so we can keep boldly pushing for urgent change. For decades, we’ve been a fearless, tenacious watchdog for people and our planet, and our expertise is perfect for this moment. But now we’re counting on you, John.

Right now, a donor will match your gift dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact!

Please give as generously as you can. Rush a donation to Friends of the Earth today.
