Did you know that climate change has a disproportionate impact on marginalized groups, including Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income communities around the world?
Along with other forms of systemic inequality, environmental racism can cause many of the underlying conditions that make COVID-19 particularly dangerous for Black and Brown communities.
These communities tend to be more exposed to environmental hazards ranging from living on or near pollution sites, to not being able to rebuild quickly following a natural disaster. Which means COVID-19 is hitting already struggling communities especially hard.
In fact, a study released last week found that people living in areas with higher air pollution—overwhelmingly communities of color—are 15% more likely to die from COVID-19 if they contract it.
