What a week. Six days ago I learned that the husband and daughter of a local acquaintance of mine were killed by a drunk driver. Two other friends received serious health diagnoses. On Saturday, an assassination attempt was made on a former U.S. president. Wars are still being waged. National disasters whip up at a moment’s notice.
I almost don’t want to pick up my phone anymore. I was reminiscing yesterday about how easy and chill life was as a kid. There’s something about growing up that brings with it a sobering element. Life becomes especially real and fragile. Things change at warp speed (hello, this week’s

feature article on artificial intelligence ), and there are no guarantees that the careful plans we’ve laid will come to pass (hello, my recent study on the

life of Joseph ). The one guarantee we have is God himself, who according to

James 1 does not change. The chapter also promises that we will have trials, that God gives wisdom to those who ask, and that a crown of life will be given to those who persevere. Let’s persevere, friends. We don’t always know what God is doing, but at least we know that in this sad, sinful mess of world events, He’s in control.
