Friend,
This week we launched a new TV ad, our third of this campaign. You can watch it here:
WATCH NOWIf you’ve seen our other ads so far — and hopefully you have — you might notice that this one is a little bit different.
You see, it’s about the reason I first ran for Congress, and what drives my work today: my mom. But it could have been anyone’s mom. She had survived breast cancer when I was very young, and her pre-existing condition hung over all of us. She lost her job and couldn’t afford health insurance — and then she was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer.
It was like a grenade went off in our lives. As my mom fought the disease, we fought the insurance companies and drew up bankruptcy papers.
The ad is about my mom’s story, but it’s also about the moment I decided to run for office and the duty that elected officials owe their constituents. In 2017, when I saw my then Congressman on the White House lawn, grinning at a celebration of the House repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which would have eliminated protections for people like my mom, something inside me broke. So I ran against him, and in 2018 we fired him as our Congressman.
That moment and the experience of getting my mom the care she needed are why I first ran, and they’re why I fight today.
This ad is also a little different because it’s a full 60 second ad, when most of the ads campaigns run are 30 seconds. We did this because it’s important that we tell voters the full story of who I am and why I am running, but this ad being twice as long also makes it twice as expensive.
