John,
While the term "national monuments" evokes stone statues commemorating
historic events or people, it also incorporates stunning landscapes on
land and underwater. TPL has advocated for the creation and expansion of several of these significant places.

The Magic of National Monuments
[link removed]
National monuments are federally protected landscapes and historic
sites ranging in size from just a few acres to more than 2 million
acres. Unlike national parks, which are created through an act of
Congress, national monuments can also be designated by the president
of the United States. Trust for Public Land has helped create and
expand national monuments across the country, as well as protect
adjacent lands to improve public access.

Named after the Chuckwalla lizard, this breathtaking, nearly
700,000-acre landscape in Southern California is more than just a
picturesque backdrop-it's a sanctuary for Indigenous heritage
and a lifeline for endangered species. But this cherished landscape is
under threat, and we need your help to ensure its preservation. Urge
President Biden to protect Chuckwalla as a national monument today!

Preserving the Appalachian Trail Experience

Last month, we preserved nearly 200 acres alongside the treasured
Appalachian Trail in Tyringham, Massachusetts. Views from the trail
are a core part of the hiking experience, but the forests are at risk
of development. This effort preserves one of the most scenic stretches
along the Appalachian Trail for generations of recreationists to
enjoy.
