John,
Last Saturday, we came dangerously close to witnessing the assassination of a former president. An AR-15, the weapon of choice for mass shooters, was used in an attempt on Donald Trump's life, leaving one innocent bystander dead and others injured.
This shocking event has put the danger of assault weapons back into the national spotlight. But here's what's even more chilling: It could have been much worse if that AR-15 had been equipped with a bump stock -- a device that turns semi-automatic rifles into virtual machine guns, capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute.
We've seen the horrific results before, in Las Vegas, where a shooter used a bump stock to kill 60 people and wound 500 more in a matter of minutes.
After that massacre, even the Trump administration recognized the danger, banning bump stocks through executive action. But recently, the Supreme Court overturned that ban on a technicality. Now, these deadly devices could flood our streets again unless Congress acts.
Tell Congress: Ban bump stocks immediately. Make it law, not just a regulation. We can't afford to wait for the next tragedy.
This shocking incident involving a former president has created a rare moment of potential bipartisan action. Both parties are paying attention. Both sides recognize the danger. But this window won't stay open for long.
This isn't about politics. It's not about the Second Amendment. It's about preventing massacres. It's about saying no to devices that turn guns into weapons of mass destruction. It's about valuing human lives over gun industry profits.
America has once again experienced the terror of an AR-15 firsthand. And this time, there's a real chance for bipartisan support, but it won't happen unless we demand it.
Tell Congress to ban bump stocks and make our communities safer now.
Let's keep working to protect our communities and save lives.
