This Disability Pride Month, we are honored to celebrate the diverse experiences and identities of LGBTQ+ young people with disabilities. Our recent 2024 National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People offers profound insights into their lives and underscores the importance of support and inclusivity.
Key Findings From Our 2024 Survey:
Nearly one-third (29%) of LGBTQ+ young people identified as having a disability, highlighting the intersection of identities within our community.
Mental health challenges are more pronounced among these individuals:
60% reported experiencing recent depression.
75% experienced recent anxiety.
48% seriously considered suicide in the past year, with 19% having attempted it.
Alarmingly, 65% felt discriminated against due to their disability, leading to higher rates of mental health struggles and suicidality.
Despite these challenges, there is hope and a path forward. Our survey also revealed that nearly two-thirds of LGBTQ+ young people with disabilities felt understood by their therapist, which was associated with significantly lower rates of suicide attempts.
To better understand and support LGBTQ+ young people with disabilities, we encourage you to explore the various resources we offer. These guides provide practical advice on creating inclusive environments and underscore the importance of embracing our differences.
By utilizing these resources, we can all contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment where LGBTQ+ young people with disabilities feel valued and understood. Accessing and sharing this information can help bridge gaps in understanding, foster empathy, and ultimately improve the mental health and well-being of these young individuals.
Support from individuals like you enables The Trevor Project to continue our work to end LGBTQ+ youth suicide through our crisis services as well as the development of resources and guides like these to promote education and allyship.
