Dear friend,

Yesterday, President Biden called on Congress to cap rent increases nationally at 5%. If implemented, this would be an unprecedented win for renters.

This policy is an important step in the right direction to meaningfully address the housing crisis — and it’s thanks to years of tireless organizing of working-class tenants and homeowners to sound the alarm and fight for affordable housing in our communities. But it’s just the beginning of getting the real housing solutions we need.

We are clear that Biden’s proposal is at this point, just that, and has a ways to go to becoming a reality. We will need to keep our eyes on the prize to make sure that he lives up to his commitment and not let big real estate and corporate landlords derail this effort. They are already working hard to derail the announcement and cast doubt on rent caps as a policy.

At the end of the day, their only interest is squeezing as much profit from working people as possible. But we know that rent control is an effective, common sense housing policy that keeps housing more affordable and protects our communities against displacement and so many agree with us! In our recent poll of voters across 5 key states [[link removed]], the vast majority are in favor of rent stabilization! Working class renters and homeowners are rising up to become a powerful force that politicians can no longer ignore. We will continue to fight to ensure that there are permanently affordable, safe, and stable Homes For All.
