An assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump over the weekend has sparked a nationwide conversation about the safety of political rallies in an increasingly-polarized America.

This incident is the most serious threat to a prominent political figure since the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. Reagan was shot and seriously wounded by John Hinckley Jr. outside a Washington, D.C., hotel. The attack resulted in increased security measures for presidents and major political figures​.

Top Democrats Urge Biden To Step Out of the Race

In the aftermath of the debate, leading Democrats have been pushing Biden to step out of the race and let another top Democrat run. Party members are questioning whether the 81-year-old is fit to serve another term. 

In response, Biden has maintained that he will not drop out of the race. The president wrote in a letter to congressional Democrats that he is "firmly committed to staying in the race" and challenges other Dems to run against him.
