Amid blistering heat waves, birds are counting on you ([link removed])
To reduce body heat, birds commonly open their mouths and flutter their neck muscles—a strategy similar to panting. However, over long periods in excessively high temperatures, this strategy actually causes birds to lose too much water, leading to eventual dehydration and death. Right before our eyes, we’re watching extreme heat-related bird deaths happen more and more often as our planet warms to dangerous degrees.
Amid this code-red climate emergency—and as their very survival is threatened—birds are relying on your support now more than ever. So please, start your annual donation right away while, thanks to a group of generous donors, your first gift will be matched, up to $50,000. ([link removed])

If climate change continues unchecked, more extreme weather events, including heat waves, will worsen the impacts on birds and their habitats. Extreme heat causes issues for different species from songbirds like the American Goldfinch to seabirds like the Common Murre. Yet we are not without hope. With more than a century of conservation expertise under our wing, our research is powering a path forward to help more birds survive at this critical time. Through important advocacy and hands-on conservation action to maintain and protect resilient landscapes across the nation, we’re pushing for the large-scale change it will take to ease habitat loss and help reverse the climbing temperatures of our current climate crisis.
