You may have heard Monday’s vibrant rallying cry for workers and unions by Teamsters President Sean O’Brien.
It was a head scratcher because he gave it at the Republican National Convention, in front of Donald Trump and congressional Republicans who all oppose pro-union legislation, oppose higher wages and workplace safety, and support cuts to Social Security!
Trump’s Project 2025 agenda would ban some unions and strip rights from others. 50,000 civil servants could be fired and replaced by political Trump lackeys – a hostile takeover of the government.
Meanwhile, President Biden and Democrats saved 325,000 Teamster pensions with the American Rescue Plan, which every Republican opposed. Democrats during the Biden years have had the strongest pro-union record in generations – according to the AFL-CIO and Bernie.
We have no objection to O’Brien speaking at the Republican convention. But he’s actively participating in 2024 misinformation by giving his stamp to Trump without calling on him to match the Democratic Party’s strong pro-worker agenda. It’s even worse that he threatens to keep the Teamsters neutral in 2024, signaling that the parties are the same when he knows better. Raw misinformation.
We’ve never petitioned a major union before, but the stakes are too huge to be silent: Tell Teamsters President Sean O’Brien it is misinformation to stay neutral in 2024 if Donald Trump and Republicans won’t publicly match the Democratic Party’s strong pro-worker agenda – especially after Republicans have spent decades undermining workers and unions. SIGN HERE.
We’re sure Donald Trump slapped O’Brien’s back after the speech. Trump wins if he doesn’t actually need to stand with workers in order to bask in the glow of a respected union leader.
Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, fakes that he’s pro-worker. But in reality, his Senate campaign was bankrolled by anti-union right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel. All 48 senators who support the landmark PRO (union) Act are Democratic – Vance and every other Republican opposes it. And Vance earned a ZERO on his AFL-CIO legislative scorecard.
Tell the Teamsters: Staying neutral in 2024 misinforms voters about who stands with workers.
Here are some of the things O’Brien said at the RNC, all of which are Democratic Party priorities and none of which are Trump Republican priorities:
"We need corporate welfare reform. Under our current system, massive companies like Amazon, Uber, Lyft, and Walmart take zero responsibilities for the workers they employ. These companies offer no real health insurance, no retirement benefits, no pay leave, relying on underfunded public assistance. And who foots the bill? The individual taxpayer."
"It's only when Americans band together in democratic unions that we win real improvements on wages, benefits, and working conditions."
"Labor law must be reformed. Americans vote for a union, but can never get a union contract. Companies fire workers who try to join unions, and hide behind toothless laws that are meant to protect working people, but are manipulated to benefit corporations. This is economic terrorism."
"We need legal protections that make it safer for workers to get a contract. We must stop corporations from abandoning local communities to inflate their bottom line. We need meaningful bankruptcy reform today."
Thanks for standing with workers – and helping to save democracy in 2024.
