Countries across the Global South face two major challenges. They need to lift people out of poverty and create jobs for young people and the generations to come after them. At the same time, they need to tackle the climate crisis that is ravaging their countries. The current economic system has deepened inequality and failed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It cannot offer solutions to the problems it has created.
We need new ideas. Countries should not have to choose between pursuing prosperity for their people and protecting the planet.
This is why I’m proud to share that Open Society is committing $400 million toward creating new models of green economic growth shaped by the Global South and responsive to its needs.
This is our first major investment under our new operating model. Over the next eight years, we will support civil society organizations and independent economic think tanks working on policy issues in countries including Brazil, Mexico, Senegal, South Africa, Malaysia, and Indonesia as they transform their economies to meet the challenges they face.
At the heart of these efforts will be coalitions of social movements, civil society, researchers, and policymakers, coming together within and across regions as stakeholders in a common future.
At Open Society, this work is central to our mission as a philanthropy dedicated to human rights, equity, and justice. We cannot have open societies if they are not fairer, more just societies. I look forward to staying in touch with all of you as we embark on this journey.
Yours,
Binaifer Nowrojee
