Today, we witnessed another critical moment in the fight for integrity and accountability in our government: A jury of his peers found New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez guilty on all 16 counts in a federal corruption trial.
The charges—including bribery, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent—are deeply concerning, not only for our democracy but for the safety and security of our entire country.
The senator accepted cash, gold bars, luxury watches, and even car payments in exchange for political favors to Egypt and Qatar. This is a blatant betrayal of the trust we place in our elected officials, and we can’t let it go unanswered.

John, Senator Menendez is the first sitting member of Congress to be charged with conspiracy by a public official to act as a foreign agent.
But even as you read this, he continues to sit on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which is charged with shaping the country’s international policy and affairs.

That’s why Common Cause has long advocated for an independent ethics office, rather than relying on senators to referee themselves. Today’s conviction of Senator Menendez serves as a powerful reminder of just why this reform is so necessary.
