Collaborating across sectors to reduce food waste, empower working families, and pilot new solutions is exactly the kind of bold, innovative leadership that Bethany will bring to the Governor’s office!
The First State is really living up to its name – and it's all thanks to Bethany's leadership!
Last week, Delaware debuted a first-in-the-nation program that uses AI to reduce hunger and food waste. As part of the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities, Bethany has brought together the founders of Priceline (yes, the travel agency!) with federal officials and state agencies to make it all happen. And while this program is expanding nationally, the First State gets to try it out before anyone else!
Here’s how it works:
Using artificial intelligence, the SmartShopper app identifies surplus food at grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste
Those who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are matched to surplus food using predictive data analysis
Digital coupons, nutritional information, dietary recommendations, and recipes are available to SNAP recipients through the app as well!

As a healthcare professional and public servant, Bethany knows how crucial it is for every person to have access to healthy, nutritious food – especially growing children.
In 2022, more than 120,000 Delawareans were food insecure. That’s unacceptable for Bethany, which is why in addition to leading the SmartShopper program, she’s also made over 15,000 canisters of baby formula available for pickup.
