In today’s edition, we cover the Wisconsin Supreme Court's ruling to reinstate secure ballot drop boxes, North Carolina's potential restrictions on mail-in ballot verification, and the Tennessee Secretary of State's letters to more than 14,000 voters requesting proof of U.S. citizenship.

😃 THE GOOD: The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled to reinstate secure ballot drop boxes ahead of the Fall 2024 elections, overturning a 2022 decision. The ruling emphasized that drop boxes are a lawful option for absentee ballot delivery and does not force municipal clerks to use them.

😠 THE BAD: North Carolina may require the board of elections to work with outside groups on voter purges and make mail-in ballot verification more difficult. The State Senate approved S.B. 88, mandating counties to use software to verify voter signatures on mail ballot envelopes, which could deter people from voting by mail. Meanwhile, the House passed H.B. 1071, which directs the state board of elections to collaborate with unspecified "election integrity organizations" for voter purges — a threat to our democracy. The opposite chambers are now considering both bills.

😡 THE UGLY: The Tennessee Secretary of State sent letters to more than 14,000 voters this month, asking for proof of U.S. citizenship. Many naturalized citizens received these letters asking voters to provide a birth certificate or other documentation or request removal from the voter rolls. Lawmakers have condemned the letters as voter intimidation and called for an investigation. In Texas in 2019, a similar purge effort mistakenly targeted more than 100,000 citizens and led to the Secretary of State's resignation.
