What we can do about the situation in Kenya

(View online) ([link removed])
friend – did you see the news from Kenya last month?

Demonstrators took to the streets in huge protests against tax rises on essentials like bread and cooking oil. Horrifically, 39 protesters were killed and many more were injured.

Kenya is in a deep economic crisis. Our partners there point the blame squarely on one thing – the size of its debt. But so far, the response of the international community has only been to offer yet more loans and force more austerity onto Kenyan people. Public spending in Kenya is nose-diving.

This is clearly not sustainable. Nor is it fair on the people of Kenya. But there is another answer.

For the last year and a half, supporters like you have pushed forward our campaign for a new debt justice law that would force greedy lenders to cancel debt for lower-income countries in crisis. We’re now so close to making it a reality, but I need your help to get us over the finish line.
friend, could you give £5 today ([link removed]) to make sure we can cut through the post-election noise to win justice for millions of people living in countries in debt crisis?

Kenya is just one of 54 countries in debt crisis. But it’s a debt crisis our government has a huge amount of power to help end. Because 90% of the debts owed to big finance by lower-income countries are governed by UK law.

Before the election, supporters like you helped win a manifesto pledge from Labour to make “tackling unsustainable debt” in lower-income countries a priority. Now that they are in government, we must make sure that these aren’t just empty words.

We need Labour to commit to a debt justice law forcing greedy lenders to cancel unfair debts. This early period of their government is a critical moment for setting priorities. We must keep up the pressure now – and with you by our side, we can. Let’s power this campaign to victory!
Donate today ([link removed]) and we can stand in solidarity with people from lower-income countries – mobilising more people to take action, building momentum, and piling the pressure on our new government to act.

In Kenya, as in Ghana, greedy lenders are putting profit before people – and it’s ordinary people who are suffering. Enough is enough. It’s time for a debt justice law. And together we can make it happen.

Thank you for all your support,
