Last Tuesday Joe Bentivegna, heretofore a conservative writer, revealed he has fallen prey to one of the Left’s favorite and most effective political traps. On July 1st I published “The Race vs. Jim Himes Cannot Be Contested on a Democrat-Defined Political Battlefield.” The article diagnoses two of the most effective gambits played against Republicans, election cycle after cycle. See the complete article Here.
In short, the article illustrates how the Politico-Media Leftist machine, through intimidation and polarization, makes the most effective Republican figures and most effective issues ‘radioactive’ i.e., too hot for Republicans to touch or be associated with. The result is too many Republicans avoid our most effective issues during campaigns, and in the end sound principle-less, and more like Democrats, playing right into the hands of the Left.
The other Leftist gambit deployed against us is the deception that voters registered as Unaffiliated are ‘moderates’, simply seeking ‘reasonable-sounding solutions.’ The reality is that voters who do not ‘affiliate’ with either party are in-fact, largely principled people. They see the Democrats as deceptive and in recent years as on the wrong track. They see Republicans as not firmly standing up and opposing the Democrat agenda, and if they do, there’s little to no follow-up with action. The voting behavior of the Unaffiliateds over the last fifteen years has confirmed this insight.
But Tuesday, Joe Bentivegna, circulated an Article which stunningly falls right into the Left’s favorite trap! It follows a similar prior Article. Joe, over the last decade had several times encouraged me to make a run against Jim Himes. But today, he’s a surrogate and writes on behalf of his personal friend, my opponent in the 4th District congressional primary. In the articles, Bentivegna advises us that my opponent is a “moderate” and will have a moderate “coattail effect” for the rest of the ticket. Yes, he is advising the same failed strategy that has brought us seven straight double-digit losses against Mr. Himes since 2010... and about 41 of all the 45 Federal seat losses in CT since 2006!
It is a fool’s errand to run this playbook yet again. This ‘pursuing the moderates’ gameplan leads to the Republican candidate shape-shifting his position when challenged, and sounding increasingly like the incumbent Democrat’s positioning in an effort to attract his voters. But why should they switch when they think they already have a ‘moderate’ (albeit a fraudulent one in the person of Jim Himes) in office. The result is that principled Republicans become discouraged and depress turnout, and the majority of Unaffiliateds see no reason to vote for the Republican. This ‘aping’ of the Democrat positioning to any degree, is a proven losing strategy in Connecticut.
The only way to drive turnout for the entire ticket is to energize Republicans from the top down by taking principled stands on our issues, and responding with more ‘offense’ when challenged. We need a full-throated articulation of our nation’s founding principles, and advancement of our Republican issues, because these issues resonate in both our towns and our cities.
Nothing less than our American way-of-life is at stake. Mr. Obama’s “fundamental transformation of America” is in full-bloom today, in every corner of our society. And, more and more of our neighbors are waking up to this reality every day. Unfortunately, there can be no ‘consensus-building’, as my opponent has put it, with a party that seeks our elimination and a permanent majority for themselves.
We need to fight for the African-American and Hispanic voters that Himes takes for granted in Bridgeport; we need to fight for the Jewish voters that Himes insults with his pro-C.A.I.R. comments in Norwalk; and we need to fight for the young professionals seeking in vain for affordable housing for their growing families in Stamford.
I am only in this race to fight for the cherished principles of our American way of life for all the citizens of the 4th District - and to champion them right through to an upset victory over Jim Himes on November 5th. I am the candidate to handle a hostile press (and it will get mighty hostile when the race tightens), because I’ve already been through it all. I will upend all the deceptive Leftist gambits deployed against us by Mr. Himes and the DNC - and finally return true representation to all the solid citizens of the 4th District. They deserve nothing less.
In order to accomplish it, I need your support and would be honored with your vote in the August 13th Primary.
This Commentary appeared this morning as a an article in
The Connecticut Centinal
Let’s finally end the Jim Himes chapter and return the citizens of CT-4 to their rightful seat at the table.
Again, thank you all so very much.
In liberty,
