Late last night, Donald Trump announced that he plans to sign an executive order suspending all immigration into the U.S. while tens of thousands of Americans lose their lives across the country.

He's using COVID-19 as his excuse, but really: This is a desperate stunt to try and distract from his administration's incompetent response to the virus.

We won't be fooled, and we won't be distracted. We believe in an America where we care for our families and our neighbors, no matter who they are, where they are from, or the color of their skin. We combat this virus by coming together and caring for each other.

Trump's planned executive order is a cynical political stunt that ignores the facts: immigrants are woven into the fabric of the nation's response to the crisis -- whether they are farmworkers, doctors, nurses, caretakers, nannies, teachers, or house cleaners. They are on the front lines of this crisis, and they will be on the front lines of the economic recovery.

By suspending all immigration -- reportedly extending from new Green Cards to work visas -- he'll cause even more heartbreak for families across the country who are already struggling to get by during these challenging times.

All families deserve to be cared for with dignity and compassion, whether they're attempting to shelter in place, trapped in a detention center, or languishing in a dangerous tent camp at the border.
