The CARES Act passed by Congress on March 30th was chock full of unsupervised “bailouts” for big business -- and left working people, small businesses, hospitals and healthcare workers high and dry. Three weeks later, corporations have already cashed out, while many Americans are still being told, “The check’s in the mail.”

People like Tomas Ramos (NY-15) didn’t wait around for Congress to act. As the crisis in New York City was just beginning to escalate, Tomas reached out to local hospitals with a helping hand.

Through the nonprofit he founded, Bronx Rising Initiative, Tomas raised over $3 million dollars, plus a contribution of 10,000 N95 masks, for struggling Bronx hospitals in less than 3 weeks.

The first check, for $1.13M, was delivered to St. Barnabas Hospital on March 17th. The second, for $1.71M, was delivered to BronxCare - Bronx Lebanon Hospital on March 20th.

Thanks to these funds, both hospitals were able to expand their ICU bed capacity and schedule more nurses and specialists to work full time during the crisis.

Tomas’ commitment to making real change stands as an example of the kind of leadership we need in Congress. Tomas isn’t a millionaire. He’s a community activist that’s lived through struggle throughout his entire life. We deserve representatives who refuse to sit on their hands when working people are suffering. We need leaders who put people before profits and politics.
