Donald Trump Becomes the Official Nominee of the Republican Party for President of the United States

Jennifer Van Laar: Donald Trump is now officially the Republican nominee for President of the United States in 2024, after a roll call vote during the opening session of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Trump’s son Eric announced earlier Monday that he’d be the one pledging the delegates that would put his dad over the 1,215 delegate mark (RedState). MSNBC: Eric Trump pledges Florida’s 125 delegates to his father, Donald Trump, making Trump the official Republican nominee (X). Reporter Dana Alexa: And just like that, Donald J. Trump securing the GOP nomination at the 2024 RNC in Milwaukee. During roll call, Trump took to Truth Social to announce Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate. Donald Trump Picks J.D. Vance as His VP Running Mate
Fox News: With an eye toward the future of a Republican Party dominated by former President Trump and his legions of MAGA supporters, Trump has named 39-year-old Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate on the GOP’S 2024 national ticket. The former president, who made his greatly anticipated and high-stakes announcement on Monday as the Republican National Convention kicked off in swing-state Wisconsin’s largest city, will now share the ticket with one of his top supporters in the Senate and a one-time Trump critic who has transformed into a leading America First disciple (Fox News). American Conservative: Vance, 39, not only brings youth to the ticket but also populist ideological bonafides to bolster Trump’s campaign…. The selection by Trump solidifies Vance as the ideological heir to the MAGA doctrine going forward. Should the Trump ticket win in November, Vance would become the 50th Vice President of the United States and one of the youngest (American Conservative).

Donald Trump Makes Strong Appearance at Republican Convention
New York Post: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump made an appearance Monday at the GOP convention, two days after he was left bloodied by a sniper’s bullet. Most of the 78-year-old former president’s right ear was seen wrapped in a bandage when he emerged at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The former president pumped his fist, gave several thumbs up and clapped as he joined his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), and members of his family seated near the stage (New York Post). ALX: Donald Trump walks in to the RNC Convention with a bandage on his ear after being shot in an assassination attempt (X). Secret Service Director Acknowledges “Unacceptable” Incident, Refuses to Step Down
Times of Israel: US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle says the shooting that injured Donald Trump at a rally is “unacceptable,” and that she will not resign her post. “I am the director of the Secret Service, and I need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary,” Cheatle tells ABC News (Times of Israel). Collin Rugg: USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle is refusing to step down after a U.S. president was nearly assassinated under her watch. President Biden Can End Lawfare to Lower Political Temperature
National Review: In the aftermath of the attempted murder of his rival, President Biden told the nation he wants to “lower the temperature in our politics,” renew the sense that “we are not enemies,” that we are “fellow Americans” who “must stand together.” With former president Trump barely cheating death, and with another American, Corey Comperatore, murdered by the assailant for simply exercising what Biden described as his “freedom to support the candidate of his choosing,” the president asked, “How do we go forward from here?” The president could take significant action that would cost him substantially nothing, would drastically improve his standing with the electorate, and would begin to bridge our deep political divide. He could put an end to lawfare…. Lawfare is the criminalization of policy differences and partisan rivalries. As such, it is another iteration of the same pathology Biden condemned in his Oval Office remarks: the abuse of power that catalyzes political violence (National Review)

President Biden Grants RFK Jr. Secret Service Protection
CNBC: Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will receive Secret Service protection at the direction of President Joe Biden as a result of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Monday… “Thank you to President Biden for granting me Secret Service protection,” Kennedy said on X. Trump, who was shot at Saturday by a 20-year-old gunman during a rally in Pennsylvania, has urged the U.S. government to provide Secret Service protection to Kennedy, who had been repeatedly denied a Secret Service detail (CNBC). Axios: Kennedy had re-upped requests for protection on the anniversary of his father’s assassination in early June. The late Kennedy was shot on June 5, 1968, after winning the Democratic primary in California. He died the following day. Former President John F. Kennedy, the presidential candidate’s uncle, was shot and killed on Nov. 22, 1963, while riding a motorcade in Dallas, Texas (Axios).

Federal Judge Terminates Trump’s Classified Documents Case
Spencer Brown: Federal Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents case brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith against former President Donald Trump on Monday morning, a massive win for Trump and a significant indictment of the Biden administration’s legal attacks on the current president’s political opponent. In her decision granting Trump’s motion to dismiss the case “based on the unlawful appointment and funding of Special Counsel Jack Smith,” Judge Cannon said Smith’s appointment by Attorney General Merrick Garland “violates the Appointments Clause of the United States Constitution.” In addition, Judge Cannon found Smith’s “use of a permanent indefinite appropriation also violates the Appointments Clause.” The ruling means the classified documents case is now officially closed and, unless an appeals court or ultimately the Supreme Court disagree, there will be no further prosecution for Trump’s handling of documents after leaving office (Townhall). Donald Trump: As we move forward in Uniting our Nation after the horrific events on Saturday, this dismissal of the Lawless Indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts (Truth Social).

Far-Left Protesters Gather Outside Republican Convention
Associated Press: Hundreds of activists gathered in a downtown Milwaukee park Monday as they prepared to spend the day protesting outside the Republican National Convention, saying the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump won’t affect their long-standing plans to demonstrate outside the site. A wide range of organizations and demonstrators gathered in the park blocks from the Fiserv Forum to listen to speakers and prepare for a street march early Monday afternoon. The Coalition to March on the RNC, comprised largely of local groups, was protesting for access to abortion rights, for immigrant rights, and against the war in Gaza among other issues (Associated Press). Wall Street Journal: Law enforcement including the FBI, the Secret Service and local police said Sunday the security plan around the event was already at the highest level so they had made no changes in response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Saturday. It is legal to openly carry a firearm anywhere in the state under Wisconsin law. On Sunday, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey B. Norman called on convention attendees with the right to carry firearms into the soft, outer perimeter around the convention space to use caution (Wall Street Journal).

President Biden Touches on Debate Performance, Walks Back Violent Rhetoric Against Trump in Interview
Just the News: President Joe Biden sat down for an on-camera interview with NBC News host Lester Holt on Monday night, in a counter-program to the Republican convention. The interview is the first time Biden is sitting down with a reporter since an assassination attempt was carried out on former President Donald Trump over the weekend. Biden commented on an increase in political violence in recent years, including the assassination attempt on a former president, calling for the country to remain united. He also admitted that he should not have used the word “bullseye” when talking about taking out Trump in the political race (Just the News). Townhall: Biden was NOT happy when Lester Holt brought up his poor debate performance and how he seemed “confused” throughout the night. LESTER HOLT: Did you re-watch the debate? BIDEN: I haven’t watched the whole debate. HOLT: Are you seeing what they saw, which was moments where you, frankly, appeared confused? BIDEN: Why aren’t you talking about Trump’s lies (X)! RNC Research: “Would you be open to doing another debate with President Trump in the next few weeks?” BIDEN: No. “Is there a sense of wanting to get back on the horse?” BIDEN (confused): “I’M ON THE HORSE … I don’t need notes. I don’t need a teleprompter” (X)!
