Every two minutes, a woman dies of completely preventable pregnancy or childbirth complications. Every day, this amounts to 800 needless deaths.
The devastating truth is nearly all of these deaths are preventable.
That’s why UNFPA is working across the globe to make motherhood safer by:
- Reaching pregnant women with skilled prenatal and postpartum care
- Training, equipping, and deploying midwives around the world, so women everywhere have the care they need during childbirth
- Providing women with access to family planning counseling
Will you help power this work by making a gift to make motherhood safe? Together, we can avoid these preventable deaths.
In remote regions of the Dominican Republic, pregnant women used to have to trek through the mountains to reach the nearest clinic for prenatal care.
At 19, Lucia had experienced this with her first two pregnancies. “To go to the hospital, I would walk out and have to sit down to rest because I got dizzy.”
But now, during her third pregnancy, she has a new way to get the care she needs: motorcycles and ambulances.
UNFPA supplied these ambulances, as well as trained health care workers, equipped 10 primary care centers, increased access to family planning, and provided new mothers like Lucia with food packages and mama kits.
Powered by donations from supporters like you, this work in the Dominican Republic and around the world helped prevent more than 30,000 maternal deaths and safely deliver 1.4 million babies in 2022 alone.
Pregnant women and new mothers are counting on your support today. Will you make a gift to help UNFPA make motherhood safe and reduce preventable maternal deaths?
Making motherhood safe is a human rights imperative and is at the core of our mandate. Thank you for supporting this critical work.
