The Puget Sound Partnership Science Panel will meet online on Wednesday, July 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. and Thursday, July 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Washington State University's D.F. Allmendinger Center, 2606 W. Pioneer Ave., Puyallup, WA.

Meeting highlights include:
Wednesday, July 17:
- A presentation and discussion about federal updates and Puget Sound Day on the Hill. Staff will brief members on the activities from Puget Sound Day on the Hill, held in Washington, D.C, on May 13-17, and discuss next steps. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff will also provide updates on the Puget Sound Federal Leadership Task Force and the Stormwater and Transportation Charter Group. Presentation by Laura Bradstreet, executive director at the Puget Sound Partnership, and Angela Adams at the EPA's Puget Sound Program.
- A presentation and discussion about the process leading up to the 2025 Washington state legislative session. Partnership staff will share an early list of topics and ideas for attention during the 2025 session and will seek Science Panel input. This discussion is a key milestone in the Partnership’s annual process to develop Puget Sound legislative priorities. Presentation by Don Gourlie, legislative policy director at the Puget Sound Partnership.
- A presentation and discussion about two Human Wellbeing projects. Staff will provide information on two projects that advance the integration of human dimensions into Puget Sound recovery. The first project, Baselines and Targets, focuses on establishing the process for and identifying baselines and targets for indicators of human wellbeing Vital Signs. The second project, Revising Vital Signs and Indicators for Healthy Human Population and Vibrant Quality of Life focuses on revising the human wellbeing Vital Signs and indicators to address gaps and incorporate learning from over eight years of learning. Presentation by Nathalie Hamel, science and evaluation performance analyst at the Puget Sound Partnership, and Kyle Clifton, social science research coordinator at the Puget Sound Partnership and Oregon State University.
- A presentation and discussion about the 2025-2029 Science Work Plan. The Science Work Plan, one of the Science Panel's primary products, identifies priority science work actions and broader recommendations for improving ongoing science. This session will include discussion about the development of the Science Work Plan for 2025-2029, including approaches to writing science work actions and identifying broader recommendations. Presentation by Katherine Wyatt, assistant science director at the Puget Sound Partnership and Scott Redman, Science and Evaluation program director at the Puget Sound Partnership.
- A Stormwater Research Tour. Science Panel members will tour the Fish Lab, where research is underway to characterize the toxicological impacts of stormwater on salmon, and the Low Impact Development (LID) facilities, where solutions to managing stormwater are being developed. The tour will be conducted by Ani Jayakaran, professor and green stormwater infrastructure specialist at the Washington State University's School of the Environment, and John Stark, director at the Washington Stormwater Center.
Thursday, July 18:
- A presentation about the Future Scenarios project. Science Panel members will learn about the results of the second Future Scenarios workshop on bold land use and Smart Growth and discuss next steps for the project. Presentation by Katherine Wyatt, assistant science director at the Puget Sound Partnership.
- A presentation and discussion about the PSEMP dialogue series. Science Panel members will recap the messages from the PSEMP dialogue series and discuss how the panel engages on Indigenous knowledge and environmental justice currently, and how they can do better in the future. Presentation by Kelly Biedenweg, chair of the Science Panel and associate professor at Oregon State University's College of Agricultural Sciences, and Katrina Radach, PSEMP manager at the Puget Sound Partnership.
- Continuing from day one, a follow-up presentation and discussion about the 2025-2029 Science Work Plan. The Science Work Plan, one of the Science Panel's primary products, identifies priority science work actions and broader recommendations for improving ongoing science.
