John,
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s recent scandals have highlighted how corrupt our judicial system has become.
For over two decades, Justice Thomas has accepted lavish vacations, private jet flights, and other expensive gifts from billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow without disclosing them.
Crow has had a stake in multiple cases that have come before the Court (including the Court’s recent, disastrous decision to overturn Chevron deference), all of which seek to increase the power of corporate interests and undermine protections for consumers.
These undisclosed gifts, worth millions, have undermined the integrity and accountability of our highest court, and raise serious questions about the influence wielded by wealthy benefactors over our judicial system. Justice Thomas has repeatedly sided with his secret, corporate benefactor. And the American people have suffered.
The problem is now so pronounced, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently introduced articles of impeachment against both Justices Thomas and Alito for corruption and unethical conduct.
Whether it's corporate donors buying the influence of Congress or billionaires swaying the Supreme Court, it’s clear we need community-backed, unbought candidates to bring about the change we need in getting dark money out of politics. Our campaign has always been, and will always be, a grassroots effort funded by supporters like you. Contribute today to help us fight for a fair and just political system where the voices of the people, not special interests, are heard.
I believe we must expand the Supreme Court and elect more congressional leaders who are accountable to the people, not special interests.
Right now there are two bills in the House that could address this issue – the Judicial Ethics Enforcement Act and Representative Pramila Jayapal’s Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act.
Either or both of these bills could help ensure that our justices are held to the same ethical standards as other federal officials and bring much-needed transparency and accountability to the judiciary.
Unfortunately, my opponent, Jimmy Gomez, is not sponsoring either of these important bills.
CA-34 deserves better. We need new leadership that doesn’t turn a blind eye to corruption and undue influence in our government.
The need for reform doesn't stop at the judiciary. We must also address the undue influence of money in our political system.
Jimmy Gomez’s reliance on corporate donors, including healthcare companies, pharmaceutical giants, and weapons manufacturers, mirrors the same issues we see with Justice Thomas.
These contributions raise serious concerns about whose interests are being represented, and whether the needs of our community are truly being prioritized.
Whether it’s Clarence Thomas and his luxury vacations, or Jimmy Gomez and his corporate donors, money has too much influence in our politics. We need to get dark money out of our courts, out of our politics, and out of our campaigns.
Our campaign is committed to building and strengthening a grassroots movement, fighting for stronger ethical standards, and holding elected officials accountable. Let’s bring community-focused leadership to Washington. Contribute now to help us achieve this vision and ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear in the halls of Congress.
It’s time for us,
David Kim
