Policy Update: Protecting Our Great Lakes
As a servant of the Great Lakes State, I will always protect our lakes and ensure that future generations can enjoy clean water and clean air. Michiganders know that the Great Lakes are more than just bodies of water; they are a way of life. Since I took office, I have fought to bolster and support the Great Lakes in every way possible.
The first bill I passed through the House of Representatives was an act to support our Soo Locks—a CRITICAL piece of the Great Lakes Economy. These locks, which are crucial to Michigan’s economy and way of life, demand our immediate attention and swift action.
I am a member of the Great Lakes Task Force and an original co-sponsor of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act of 2024, which will extend the critical Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for another five years and increase funding levels to $500 million from 2027 through 2031.
My efforts to protect the Great Lakes also include introducing a critical amendment to move funds to the U.S. Coast Guard. This amendment, which I believe is of utmost importance, aims to bolster and maintain commerce during the winter months. I have also co-sponsored the Great Lakes Mapping Act, which would result in the conducting of high-resolution mapping and exploration of the Great Lakes to better understand and protect them.
In my first term in Congress, protecting our Great Lakes was one of my top priorities. I want to assure you that I will continue to defend our nation's waterways and the way of life they allow for us all.
