Friends,
In this moment, I find myself reflecting on Psalm 133, which begins like this:
“How beautiful it is when people dwell together in unity.”
Unity doesn’t mean unanimity or complete agreement on everything — and those who are familiar with the Old Testament know that the communities described there were never short of disagreement.
But to “dwell” in unity means to live together in respect even when we disagree.
There is much we disagree on in our modern world. Nevertheless, I’ve always believed that ultimately, there is more that unites us than divides us. We are all Americans, and we all want to build communities where our families can thrive — where all our kids can have opportunity, safety, and the promise of a prosperous future.
The tragic events of this weekend made even starker the consequences that division brings to our nation.
As we continue to navigate the way forward, I am reminded why I got into public service 30 years ago, and why I’m running for re-election to the U.S. Senate: To stand up for what’s right. To stand up for equality and democracy. To stand up for all my fellow Virginians and Americans, whether or not we agree.
I hope you’ll join me today:
Add your name to mine to say you believe in standing up for one another, and for the rights of all.
Thank you for your time.
More to come soon,
Tim
