Over the weekend, our democracy faced a heinous attack when former President Trump was shot at a political rally.

It’s well known that President Trump and I have our differences, but I mean it when I say political violence of any sort is absolutely unacceptable.

There is no room for political violence in our democracy. We are a country built on diversity of opinion and differences, differences that should be expressed freely at the polls. It’s why my father brought Alex and me to this country. It’s why I served in the Army, to defend those principles. And that’s a big part of why I’m running for Congress.

That’s why this election is so important. We are going to take our vote and voices to the polls this November to keep extremists from power — extremists who want to strip away reproductive freedoms and ban books in our communities.

We will not cede an inch in defending our values and principles, but will never advocate violence.

But make no mistake, our democracy is vulnerable in the face of extremism.

The very essence of our nation will be put to the test, when voters around the country will choose to defend our democracy or accept autocratic control, and we need to do everything we can to make sure it is not the latter.

Over two decades ago, I swore an oath to protect our country and our Constitution from threats, foreign and domestic. Today, I still live by that oath, and this November, we will take down extremism the best way we can: at the ballot box.

I hope you will stand with me in that fight.
