Subject: A personal message from Rep. Houlahan on the attack against former President Trump
July 15, 2024
Dear John,
I am sure many of you are processing this weekend’s disturbing event. The recent failed assassination attempt against former President Trump is a stark reminder of the fragility of our democracy and the ever-present need to safeguard it. I join our community, Commonwealth, and country in relief that he was not seriously injured, and I share my deepest condolences to the Comperatore family, who lost a loving and devoted father, Corey Comperatore, a fellow Pennsylvanian. My thoughts are with the two individuals who were injured, and I’m thankful for the care they are receiving as they recover.
This heinous act is not just an attack on one individual but an attack on the very fabric of our nation. It is imperative that leaders from all political backgrounds unequivocally condemn such violence and unite in the pursuit of civility and decency. Political differences don’t justify violence, and it is our collective responsibility to foster an environment where dialogue and respect prevail over hatred and aggression.
The fact that this attack occurred in Pennsylvania, the birthplace of American democracy, makes it resonate even more profoundly. Our Commonwealth holds a unique place in the history of our nation. It is where our founders drafted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and, therefore, the American ethos of liberty and justice as well. This weekend’s incident will forever serve as a poignant reminder of how close we were to witnessing an American tragedy that would have left an indelible scar on our national psyche. I am grateful that did not come to bear, and I am deeply appreciative of the first responders for their quick actions. As a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, I will receive briefings to learn more about this tragic event and, as I am able, share information with you.
Despite this unsettling event, our constitutional republic remains strong and resilient. As a third-generation veteran, I am deeply committed to preserving the rights and freedoms that our forebears fought to secure. My family has a proud tradition of service, and I am confident that future generations will continue to defend and uphold our constitutional values. Together, we will overcome this dark chapter, reaffirm our commitment to democracy, and emerge stronger and more united than ever – I’m sure of it. Let us move forward with hope and determination, knowing that the spirit of liberty and justice will always prevail.
