** How do we come together to continue the important work of a just transition to a renewable, equitable, carbon-free-nuclear-free energy system during times that require us to remain physically distanced from one another? How do we connect our energy justice work to other justice movements?

We're exploring these questions in our campaigns, and we're reaching out to broader coalitions. We are discussing the deeper questions and finding ways to connect our movement to other movements in our community, throughout the state, and across the nation.

AGREE continues to participate in and support a national movement for a #PeoplesBailout ([link removed]) . We also joined more than 830 utility-justice, environmental, faith, civil-rights and labor groups calling for a moratorium on electricity, water and broadband utility shutoffs ([link removed]) .

We're hosting virtual meetings and continuing to provide teach-ins about renewable energy and the energy system. We're continuing to amplify important energy, environment, and equity issues while sharing ways that we can have our voices heard by decisionmakers.
------------------------------------------------------------

First up is tonight's Earth Day Eve Healthy Homes, Healthy Planet with Heat Pumps ([link removed]) workshop presented by AGREE's own Lindsay Speer, Campaign Manager of HeatSmart CNY. Join the online workshop to find out what a heat pump is; why it's better for indoor air quality and comfort than fossil fuel combustion heating; how heat pumps can reduce costs and make our entire energy system more efficient; and how they can help us meet our climate goals.

Second, AGREE is helping organize on-line letter writing sessions April 24 ([link removed]) and April 28 ([link removed]) as part of A Better Future for Onondaga Lake ([link removed]) . A Better Future for Onondaga Lake is encouraging the public to write letters opposing a swimming beach on a Syracuse-area Superfund lake. Onondaga Lake, sacred to all nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, is an industrially-abused Superfund site. The Haudenosaunee are teaching us that the lake is alive and deeply hurt; the lake needs further help, not a swimming beach. Though parts of the lake now meet NYS swimming standards, those standards do not consider risk of cumulative exposure to the 26 industrial contaminants, including carcinogens and neurotoxins, in the lakebottom sediments. Find out more about Onondaga Lake and community concerns at A Better
Future for Onondaga Lake ([link removed]) .

Third, AGREE, in deep conversation with the other organizations of the New York Energy Democracy Alliance and movement allies across the state, collectively crafted a response to the COVID-19 crisis. A crisis response must have justice and human rights at its core and must embody climate justice and energy democracy. Our statement outlines 14 demands ([link removed]) , and we invite you to read it.

Fourth, if you did not yet have an opportunity to call your NYS Assemblymember ([link removed]) and your NYS Senator ([link removed]) this week to ask them to support S8154 ([link removed]) /A10236 ([link removed]⋚_video=1&bn=A10236&term=2019&Summary=Y&Text=Y) , bills that create an individual Decommissioning Oversight Board (DOB) for each NY nuclear plant at the time it announces its closure, we ask that you call this week. As Indian Point reactor 2 shuts down this month, tell our legislators that New York needs Decommissioning Oversight Boards to protect the best interests of our state and our communities.

Fifth, we received news of a deadline extension for submitting a comment on whether the Public Service Commission should let National Grid have more pipelines or whether they must move on to renewable heat. We hope you can take a minute to file a comment on this important issue. (Our allies at Stop the Williams Pipeline Coalition ([link removed]) have already generated over 4,000 comments.) Let's pile on and make sure the Public Service Commission and Governor Cuomo hear us loud and clear: heat pumps, not pipelines or other methane gas infrastructure! Here is a link to the comment form ([link removed]) , and here is a link to some suggested talking points ([link removed]) . New Yorkers have stopped the Williams Pipeline twice, and together we will stop the pipeline (along with any other fracked gas infrastructure) for good!

And finally, we need you more than ever. Our members and followers have always taken a big role in moving New York to a green energy economy. In these days of distancing, virtual action is rising in importance. Share posts ([link removed]) , retweet and comment on tweets ([link removed]) , tell your friends about our work, invite them to join you on a webinar. Make calls, and send letters.

Thank you for your help. We hope you and your family and community are safe and have the resources you need. Please contact us if you have concerns. We are here for you.

Wishing you all the best and a Happy Earth Day,

Andra Leimanis
Communications & Outreach Director at Alliance for a Green Economy
