Hi John,
Over the weekend, news broke out about a shooting that happened at former president Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, making it the most recent presidential assassination attempt with a firearm since Ronald Reagan.
The shooter, a 20-year-old man, was able to fire eight shots in a matter of seconds with an AR-15 rifle from a rooftop less than 164 yards away. One of those bullets struck the former president’s right ear, another injured two attendees, and one fatally killed another attendee before the Secret Service shot the gunman.
Our stance is unequivocal. Political violence has no place in our country and is a critical threat to our democracy. It is essential that we continue to come together as a nation to address the root causes of gun violence and work towards securing our communities from nefarious hands. The Alliance remains committed to advocating for policies that prevent gun violence and promote public safety.
In addition, we extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and community mourning the tragic loss of former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was caught in the line of fire while shielding his daughters from harm amidst the shooting.
Most recently, both President Biden and Trump have condemned the violence at the rally and called for unity following the shooting. One thing is clear - acts of violence of this nature are horrific and undermine the foundation of our democracy. We hope this recent act of political violence sparks bipartisan calls for common-sense gun safety measures and prompts a critical examination of our nation`s pervasive gun culture.
Help us continue our efforts to end gun violence in three ways:
We must stand firm against political violence and persist in our efforts to create a safer future free from gun violence.
Thank you for standing with us,
Everyone from the Alliance
