This is a moment where we must stand together.

Statement: Violence has no place in our political process

On Saturday, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond issued the following statement:

"A foundation of American democracy—and of the labor movement—is peaceful disagreement and debate. While we await all the details on today’s troubling incident at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania, all Americans must be absolutely clear: violence has no place in our political process. Ever. This is a moment where people of all backgrounds and ideologies must stand together to once again condemn violence of any kind in our politics."

Endorsements for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives

Maryland and DC deserve representatives in Congress who will fight for union members and all working people in our region.

In partnership with the Metropolitan Baltimore AFL-CIO and allied unions across Maryland, the unified Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO endorses the following candidates for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives:

"From advocating for the right to collective bargaining, for fair wages and safe working conditions to championing healthcare and retirement security, these candidates recognize the challenges faced by working people and are dedicated to creating a more equitable society,” said Donna S. Edwards, president of the Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO.

In addition to these leaders for Congress, the AFL-CIO endorses President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for re-election in 2024.

“There’s absolutely no question that Joe Biden is the most pro-union president in our lifetimes,” AFL-CIO's President Liz Shuler said in June. "We’ve never seen a president more forcefully advocate for workers’ fundamental right to join a union. Now, it’s time to finish the job."

Compass Coffee workers say company’s hiring boom is an anti-union tactic

"In the weeks since workers at seven Compass Coffee locations announced plans to unionize, the Washington-based company has gone on a hiring spree that organizers and labor experts say is a traditional tactic to try to dilute pro-union votes," the Washington Post wrote last week.

"'It was pretty clear to us right off the bat, given that these people were exclusively assigned to unionizing cafes, that this was an attempt to pack the cafes and sway the election,' [Penina] Meier-Silverman said."

Remembering Osmar Daniel Chavarria

On July 9 CWA Local 2108 learned of the tragic death of union brother Osmar Chavarria while he was doing the job he loved. His co-workers at the 5 North Frederick Garage described him as a daily bundle of joy, always smiling, willing to help, and an encouraging spirit. A GoFundMe page has been established in his honor to benefit his wife and children. We hold Osmar's family and friends in our prayers.
