Dear John,

This year has been full of unexpected events. What occurred Saturday in Pennsylvania is yet another warning sign of what we’re facing and experiencing as a country. As many others have already said, violence has no place in our politics.

I know some of you were in the field this weekend and are concerned about what else might happen. Your worry is legitimate and I can say this: We will not ask anyone to participate in an activity or an event where they believe their safety may be at risk.

As with so many other things we’ve faced together over these two years, we will stand tall together for the next three months as we work to preserve American democracy. Saturday’s incident was indeed terrible, and it only heightened and further illustrated the stakes of this election.

What I have seen from you in the last two weeks, though, is a group of people dedicated to our mission, displaying incredible perseverance, and remaining unbowed by the work ahead.

Our task was never going to be easy, and anything so precious as our freedom and our Republic, requires incredible effort; effort that you have consistently demonstrated.

I want to say thank you for everything you’ve done, and all the work you will do between now and November.

Thanks,

Reed
