America Dodged A Bullet

Former President Donald Trump should be dead. A slight turn of his head to the right before what would have almost certainly been a fatal shot to his head, the assassin’s bullet instead grazed Trump’s ear at the July 13 Butler, Pa. campaign rally, who then ducked to the ground. Secret Service agents immediately rushed to Trump to assist, the assassin fired off more shots, wounding two others and killing Corey Comperatore as he heroically shielded his wife and daughter from the onslaught from the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Michael Crooks, who sharp shooters then eliminated. After the all clear, Trump rose with the agents who prepared to move away, and Trump rose his fist and urged the crowd, “Fight!” to let them know he was okay. It took a miracle, a stroke of luck — something — but the assassination of Donald Trump failed. What if it hadn’t?

Trump was referring to an illegal immigration chart to his right that he was looking at when the assassin shot, according to former White House doctor and U.S. Rep. Ronnie Jackson (R-Texas) in a July 14 interview.

Jackson recounted Trump telling him in a phone call: “‘That chart that I was going over saved my life … The border patrol saved my life… I was going over that border patrol chart… If I hadn’t pointed at that chart and turned my head to look at it, that bullet would have hit me right in the head.’”

Another potential factor was the crowd who spotted the assassin moments before the assassination attempt. Speaking to Laura Ingraham on Fox News on July 14, Michael Defrischia who witnessed the assassin crawling on the roof was amid a small crowd who were making “commotion” and alerting authorities.

"It was pretty crazy,” Defrischia said. “We were trying to, everybody, not just me and my wife but it was a small crowd around us but the rest of the crowd also was trying to tell them... he's right there, he's right there. And it seems like there was enough time that I wish somebody could have got to him before somebody had to lose their life...”

Defrischia added, "I kind of think all of us making a commotion may have actually saved the President's life though because otherwise this guy could have just had all the time in the world to do whatever. Luckily, somebody spotted him and we were able to make a big enough commotion, I think he just threw some shots off.”

The crowd alerted the authorities and by the time the first shots were fired, the event’s counter snipers’ sights were already trained on the vicinity of the shooter and were able to rapidly return fire. Did the crowd shouting rush Crooks?

Defrischia explained, "Once I seen that he had a gun with my own two eyes, I just knew that something bad may be ready to happen... He looked determined... I know that he heard all us and heard all the commotion... He wasn't letting the commotion underneath him stop him from doing what he was about to do."

So, an interconnected chain of events could have been pivotal in saving Trump: the crowd spotting the shooter, who scurried into position, sensing he had moments to act, just at the moment Trump was referring to his chart on illegal immigration, causing the shot to miss.

Where would the country be right now if the assassin had not missed?

First, this never should have happened. The Secret Service should have been on that roof. But even failing that, the crowd alerting authorities that there was a man with a gun should have had Trump being rushed off the stage before the shots were fired.

These facts alone are already enough for some supporters to suggest the shooter was “allowed” to have taken the shots amid lax security. If the assassination had succeeded, good luck shaking that notion. The security was lax. And apparently on purpose, as the Trump campaign has been requesting additional Secret Service protection, and Robert Kennedy, Jr., whose father and uncle were assassinate, has none. They’ve been denied protection.

As it is, the counter snipers are actually heroes for killing the assassin but they will likely live the rest of their lives being falsely vilified by those who will believe this was an attempted inside job. The breakdown occurred by the Secret Service advance team that never secured the adjacent buildings, which the counter snipers had nothing to do with.

There are just too many factors leading to this moment.

Trump opposed U.S. intervention into the war in Ukraine in 2016, leading to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) investigation again him and his campaign, Special Counsel Robert Mueller (who ultimately found now conspiracy with Russia by the campaign to interfere in the 2016 election), and led to his 2019 impeachment when he considered withholding weapons to Ukraine.

And after Trump has left office, he is now being prosecuted by Democratic prosecutors in Washington, D.C., Miami, Fla. and Fulton County, Ga. and was just convicted in New York City, all bids to prevent him from running or if that failed to get him convicted and potentially imprisoned before the election in November.

But all that has failed, as Trump has led national polls since Sept. 2023 as he is favored to oust President Joe Biden, even as Trump’s opponents have repeatedly said he’s a threat to democracy and falsely claiming he would make himself dictator for life.

Everything was tried to stop Trump who remains very popular, it escalated to political prosecutions and when that failed, and he was going to win, it escalated to assassination.

That’s a potentially perfect recipe for a civil war.

Political violence, like imprisoning political opponents, is deeply unpopular with Americans. Or we’d better hope it is but I think polls will bear this out in the coming days. The moment it becomes popular to murder and imprison the opposition, our country is dead. It’ll be totalitarianism.

If Trump had fallen, all bets would be off. The chain of events this might have set off are difficult to contemplate, but we are clearly standing atop a powder keg and throwing matches. President Biden is correct to call for a cooling of the temperature — and he should also realize that legal force against his opponent is still force, and it’s proving to be every bit as dangerous as has been feared.

The destruction of our country was potentially an inch away. I can't shake it. We might be tearing each other apart right now or getting ready to if Trump had died.

We almost lost him — and America.
