A short newsletter this week as I take a few days off to spend with my family. We knocked a couple hundred doors and met plenty of people that had already sent their ballots back in. Good work, LD 5 voters!
On the legislative front, the fighting is now in the legal stage over wording. The Maricopa County Superior Court ruled that HCR 2060 (SB 1070’s sequel) does NOT violate the single subject rule. Opponents can still appeal so there may be additional court decisions ahead.
With the abortion initiative, Arizona for Abortion Access is also going to court with a lawsuit against the GOP-led legislative committee’s decision to use the politically charged description ‘unborn human being’ instead of the more neutral and medically accurate ‘fetus’. Last week, organizers for the initiative reported submitting 823,685 signatures, significantly exceeding the required 383,923 from registered voters. County election officials have until August 22 to verify the validity of the signatures and report the results to the Secretary of State’s office.
My thoughts go out to family of the innocent man killed in the assassination attempt. Our country can not continue down this path of deceit, violence, and divisiveness. When we pander to incite violence, innocent people carry the pain. We must do better and expect better from our leadership.
With kindness,
Sarah
