Friend,

Yesterday's attack on former President Donald Trump was a harrowing reminder of the fragility of peaceful political discourse. Regardless of your political beliefs, every American should know that violence has no place in our society. Candidates and voters alike must be free to express their views without fearing for their lives.

Today, I'm thinking of former President Trump, his loved ones, and the civilians who were harmed and killed in the shooting. I remain committed to fostering respectful civil dialogue, even and especially in moments of tremendous political disagreement. I believe the future of our democracy depends upon it.

Moreover, I will continue fighting in Congress to enact reasonable restrictions on the sale and possession of firearms. As yesterday made clear, no one is safe from gun violence until we work together to keep guns out of dangerous hands.
