Amid the pandemonium, three rally-goers were struck by gunfire; one tragically lost their life while two others were critically injured.

The immediate aftermath saw the Secret Service evacuate Trump. Despite the shock and potential injuries, Trump emerged relatively unscathed. He later revealed the proximity of the danger, posting on Truth Social that “a bullet pierced the upper part of my right ear,” signaling just how narrow his escape had been. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by authorities, with the FBI stepping in to investigate the incident as an assassination attempt.

Choosing resilience over retreat on Sunday, Trump declared his intentions not to let the violent act disrupt his schedule. In a statement Trump announced: “Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled, at 3:30 P.M. TODAY.”

The RNC, scheduled to start on Monday, is set to conclude with Trump accepting his party’s nomination for the third time in a row. The event will take place for four days: Monday through Thursday. Law enforcement sources, including the FBI, Secret Service, and local agencies, have intensified security measures in response. Following Saturday’s attack officials are now planning to expand this perimeter and establish buffer zones around the convention areas.

Additionally, a joint threat assessment was distributed among law enforcement bodies, urging heightened vigilance. According to CBS News, this assessment did not pinpoint any credible or specific threats but showed the need for increased awareness due to the recent attack. Changes to security protocols were swiftly implemented to ensure the safety of all attendees at the upcoming RNC.

Around 2,400 delegates will convene to formally nominate Trump during a roll call vote on Monday. He is slated to accept the nomination with a speech on Thursday. Although Milwaukee is a Democratic stronghold, choosing Wisconsin—a pivotal battleground state—as the convention site strategically places the Republican Party’s message before crucial voters. This comes after Trump narrowly secured Wisconsin in 2016, only to lose it to Biden in 2020 by a close margin.

“We are grateful to the Secret Service agents and other law enforcement agencies and individuals who risked their lives literally for our nation,” Joe Biden said on Sunday. “As I said last night, there is no place in America for this.”

“Mr. Trump is a former president and nominee of the Republican Party, already receives a heightened level of security and I’ve been consistent in my direction of the Secret Service to provide him with every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety. Second, I have directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention.”
