This is going to be one of those moments we remember for the rest of our lives. I was in the grocery store when the woman behind me started to shout out the news and I didn't pay too much attention, yet suddenly my phone started buzzing and it didn't stop. Political violence is on the rise globally, yet here in America, we assume that kind of stuff doesn't happen anymore. Today we were reminded it can happen to us because it did. Regardless of how you feel about the former President, we all should be relieved that he is ok. The idea of what could have happened if the worst-case scenario took place sends shivers down my spine. I am not going to discuss the political ramifications of today's act, all you have to do is open up Twitter and you can see how some folks are reacting
President Obama is someone we can always turn to in a moment of crisis and this is what he had to say. "There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery."
What comes next is anyone's guess, we are living in unchartered territory. I will say this, hug your families tonight and do your best to reach out to those you don't always see eye to eye with on political matters. We must use this moment to heal, we have to do better because the alternative is not something we want to ever live through. When we first launched No Dem Left Behind 5 years ago one of our goals was the depolarization of America. Unfortunately, that is not something we have succeeded in yet, but this is going to serve as a reminder that we can never stop trying. All we can do is do better. We have a lot of work to do. I will be honest right now we are all feeling a bit overwhelmed, so let's take this weekend to just decompress. I will follow up early next week, as I am sure there will be plenty to share with you.
