I'll fight to protect the Sunshine Law from the Attorney General and our Governor.

I'm Going to Court

On Wednesday at 2 PM, I'm taking Missouri's Governor to the Western District Court of Appeals. I won't be there in person. I'll be using the microphone on my computer.

I'm fighting to protect Missouri's Sunshine Law. My opponents - the Governor and the Attorney General - will argue that only the wealthy and powerful deserve transparency in our government.

At a time like this, transparency is extremely important.

The
case is Elad Gross v. Governor Michael Parson, et al. The central question for the court is whether government entities can charge members of the public attorney's fees to access public records. That's what the government did to me. ([link removed])

When I asked for records of communications between the Governor's Office and corrupt dark money operatives a year and a half ago, I was charged over $3,600 in attorney's fees.

If the Attorney General and the Governor win, the government will be able to charge thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars for public records. This would have a huge impact on freedom of the press as well.

So far, three courts have sided with me that the law does not allow the government to charge these fees. The ACLU of Missouri, the Missouri Press Association, the Freedom Center of Missouri, and the Sunshine and Government Accountability Project have all filed briefs in support of my position as well.

Apparently, even the state legislature agrees; they tried to change the Sunshine Law to allow the government to charge attorney's fees. Thanks to our campaign's fight, the work of several organizations, and eventual bipartisan agreement, that attempt failed.

It's the Attorney General's job to enforce Missouri's Sunshine Law. Despite that responsibility, Missouri's current Attorney General chose to represent the Governor against me.

I've taken on this fight with my own time and resources. No matter what, I will always fight for you. I think that's what we need in an Attorney General.

As Attorney General, I will enforce Missouri's Sunshine Law, help make our state a model of transparent representative government, and bring the corruption to light so we can finally have a state that works for us all.
