Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Earlier this week, an Israeli airstrike killed at least 30 Palestinians sheltering in a school in southern Gaza. The deaths add to the more than 38,000 Palestinians who have already been killed in Israel’s ongoing assault. Meanwhile, much of Gaza’s population is at risk of starvation as the Israeli government continues to block most humanitarian aid from entering Gaza.

Today, we cannot let up in our calls for an immediate cease-fire and humanitarian access for Gaza. Keep sending messages to Congress [link removed] and please join us every Friday for our Action Hours for a Cease-fire Now. [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Iowa should use federal dollars to feed hungry kids: [link removed] The USDA has introduced a new program to help more low-income children get the food they need when school is out. Over 30 million kids could be eligible for the Summer EBT program. Unfortunately, 11 states—including Iowa—have chosen not to implement the program. In this op-ed, AFSC’s Jon Krieg calls on the governor and state legislators to prioritize feeding children and start Summer EBT. (Des Moines Register)

One immigrant family’s struggle to stay together: [link removed] No one should ever fear having a loved one detained or deported. But every day, the U.S. immigration system separates families and causes unnecessary suffering. In this story, a New Jersey family shares the ordeal they faced—and how, with support from AFSC, they were able to welcome a beloved son home.

Corporations are the true “winners” of the war on Gaza: [link removed] From Colt to Caterpillar, American companies are earning big profits from Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza. AFSC has been researching and tracking these companies. Our list [link removed] has become a resource for activists and organizations pushing for divestment in their universities, congregations, cities, and more. Read more about some of the largest war profiteers. (The Nation)

The impacts of climate change on migration: [link removed] Climate change has fueled violence and massive displacement around the world. Droughts, cyclones, floods, and other climate emergencies have devastated communities, destroying economies, agriculture, and infrastructure. In this interview, AFSC’s Eunice Ndonga discusses how the international community can support migrants displaced by climate change.
