Dear John,
President Eisenhower once said, “The American mind at its best is both liberal and conservative.” I was raised in a household that was strictly Democratic, but with aunts and uncles and cousins who were staunch Republicans. Political divisions weren’t the dealbreaker in relationships that they are today.

Obviously, that was a much healthier time in America. Whether or not someone agrees with us politically need not be the determiner of our affection. No one has a monopoly on truth, and this country belongs to all of us.
So I agree with Eisenhower. There are Republican leaders who sometimes say things that make me nod in agreement. There are conservative values that I often believe contribute to our political dynamic.
I do not have a knee jerk reaction against Republicans, or against conservatives. I did not vote for Mitt Romney but I respect Mitt Romney. I did not vote for John McCain but in many ways I respected John McCain. There are high minded principles that inform both left and right.
And then there is Donald Trump.

From the recent Supreme Court decision giving the President of the United States immunity from criminal prosecution for any "official act,” to the ways Project 2025 would subject practically every arm of the U.S. government to the direct control of the President, plans already underway on the part of Trump and his close circle should send chills up the spine of any American dedicated to freedom.
In a recent 60 Minutes episode, former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said that during his presidency Donald Trump had inquired about some protestors, “Couldn’t we just shoot them in the legs or something?” It’s beyond comprehension that any American president would say such a thing, yet with the recent Supreme Court ruling such violence perpetrated against American citizens exercising their Constitutional right to protest could be referred to as an “official act.”
These are very, very serious times and they call for deeply serious people. I have no doubt we are up to the task.
Thanks for being with me at this critical moment in our journey, as we continue to stand for the most powerful counterforce to a Trump victory in November.
