In this week's Financial Services Committee hearing, I spoke to Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell about a bipartisan letter I sent supporting the extended operating hours for Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service. This will allow people continual access to their funds outside of “normal operating hours,” ensuring that they can transfer money, pay bills, and avoid late fees, regardless of their work schedule. By reducing reliance on short-term lending, we can break the cycle of debt and reduce financial stress among the most vulnerable populations. Watch a clip from my questions below: | Fighting Against Trump's Project 2025 | On the House Floor it was another week of Republican bills based on Trump's lies and extreme agenda. Among other items, we voted on the SAVE Act and a Congressional Review Act (CRA) of Title IX. Republicans are once again undermining our safe and secure elections with the so-called "SAVE Act" based on the failed former President’s lies. Noncitizen voting in federal elections is already a federal crime. This proposal only makes it harder for millions of eligible Americans, particularly marginalized groups, to register to vote. Native peoples, rural voters, young people, the elderly, millions of married women, and military members would face new barriers. It's nothing more than voter suppression in disguise. While extreme MAGA Republicans sow doubt about our elections, I will fight for voting rights, equitable access to the ballot, and to protect our democracy from election deniers. Republicans claim to care about women, but the introduction of the Title IX CRA shows their true colors. The Title IX CRA gutted regulations that clarify protections against sex discrimination and sexual violence. 210 Republicans voted for it. | These policies were ripped straight from the pages of Project 2025. Let's be clear: this is all failed former President Donald Trump. What we voted on this week is just a sample of what House Republicans have planned for the country. Our freedoms are on the line! In case you had any doubts, I voted against these extreme policies and will continue to fight for our democracy and the American people every day in Congress. | If you found the information in this email useful, please forward this to a friend and have them subscribe here, to keep up with all things in the Fighting Fifth! | Nikema Williams Member of Congress | Washington, D.C. 1406 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Phone: (202) 225-3801 | Atlanta 100 Peachtree Street NW | Suite 1920 Atlanta, GA 30303 Phone: (404) 659-0116 | |
