Dear Friend,
Growing up in North Texas, this community afforded me so many opportunities and shaped my career in service. Now it’s my turn to help create new pathways to service for all young Texans who want to give back to their communities. That’s why this week, I introduced the AmeriCorps Access for Dreamers Act, which would expand the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to DACA recipients.
AmeriCorps volunteers dedicate their time to create positive change in their communities by helping tackle our nation’s most pressing local needs. The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award helps volunteers repay qualified student loans and pay for expected higher education and training program expenses. To date, Texans have earned over $232.3 million from this award. However, Dreamers are currently ineligible for the Segal Education Award.
Dreamers know no home other than America and should have every opportunity to serve our country if they choose. The AmeriCorps Access for Dreamers Act will open doors to service through AmeriCorps. As we continue to work toward a long-term solution to ensure Dreamers have a pathway to earned citizenship, I’m proud to lead this legislation to ensure Dreamers have access to the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award so they can pursue their dreams.
I am so grateful to this community where I was born and raised. I will always work to expand opportunities for all Texans.
Sincerely,
Colin Allred Member of Congress
