Yesterday, I took the tough but important step of becoming the first member of a battleground presidential state to call on President Biden to step aside.

This decision wasn’t made lightly, but the stakes of this election are too high to delay any longer. We cannot win the presidency without Michigan, and we cannot win Michigan without my district.

Let me be clear: I deeply respect and admire President Biden. His life of public service is a foundation for the strength of the Democratic party, and the past four years have been among the most productive of any president in recent history. But to build on that progress, we must ensure the viability of the Democratic ticket.

Though I deeply respect President Biden’s contributions to our country, I no longer believe in his ability to lead the Democratic party to a decisive victory against Donald Trump. And it could risk our House and Senate as well. Michigan has already been downgraded at the presidential level to a toss-up.

Donald Trump remains an ever-present, existential threat to our democracy. The recent Supreme Court ruling granting immunity from prosecution to presidents and former presidents only serves to amplify our fears. Our failure to learn from the events of the January 6th insurrection and the potential for history to repeat itself is a stark reality. We cannot afford to ignore this threat.

When I came into this office, I swore an oath that I would represent the people of Michigan’s 3rd District with integrity. They elected a Congresswoman they trust to speak the truth, even when it’s difficult. They voted for someone who would put America’s future first and stand up for what is right. That’s what I’m doing now.

We have a tough fight ahead of us, but I know that the strength of this grassroots movement can overcome any obstacle.
