Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Last week, more than 270,000 people joined us in Downtown DC to celebrate the Fourth of July, and even with some rain, we had a great day. We have a fantastic Downtown ? it?s beautiful and walkable, it?s accessible by public transportation, it has great restaurants, and parks, and museums. But always the best part about Downtown ? and any neighborhood in DC ? is the people.

Last year, we set an important goal: to add at least 15,000 new residents Downtown. This week, we celebrated an important step forward with the opening of the Elle apartments, the first major office-to-housing conversion in Downtown DC. We also announced a new ?Office to Anything? program, which will incentivize the conversion of empty office buildings into housing, shops, restaurants, and more.?

You might remember that in the spring we launched a pilot Pop-Up Permitting program, which simplifies the process for entrepreneurs to open businesses in vacant storefronts. We talked then about how we are focused on bringing our creative community into the transformation of Downtown; and now through July 21, Capital Fringe is breathing new life into several vacant storefronts with their annual arts festival. It?s just one example of how we can work together to bring more people Downtown. ??

We know that vibrant neighborhoods need people ? at all hours of the day: workers, residents, and visitors. I'm grateful for the partners who are supporting DC?s Comeback ? these conversions can be challenging, but doing great work in our beautiful city is worth it.??

Sincerely,?

Muriel BowserCooking Camp
