Securing Our Elections

The right to vote is a fundamental principle of the United States of America.

In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of jurisdictions across the country allow noncitizens to vote in their elections. In our nation's capital, noncitizens are eligible to vote in municipal elections. For example, a noncitizen only has to reside in the Washington, D.C. for 30 days in order to register to vote. Last month, the House voted 262-143 to end this practice in D.C. Unfortunately, the Senate has not taken up that legislation.

Every illegal vote cancels out the legal vote of an eligible American voter. We cannot allow this to spread across the U.S.

Ensuring our laws are being enforced to prevent noncitizen voting is critical. As Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, I led the passing of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) in the House of Representatives this week.

The SAVE Act will prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections by requiring states to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and identity in-person when registering an individual to vote in federal elections.

Watch me discuss the SAVE Act on the House Floor here:

It seems like a simple and obvious idea. Yet, many in Congress oppose this common-sense legislation. They argue that it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. But it is also against the law to evade Border Patrol and illegally enter the country. That hasn't stopped the more than 7 million migrants Border Patrol has encountered at the southern border during President Biden's tenure.

By passing the SAVE Act this week, Congress took a crucial step to prevent noncitizen voting and secure our elections. While much work still remains. I will continue fighting to protect our elections.
