Dear neighbor,

It’s been a very busy week in Washington. While I was hard at work with my Democratic colleagues, House Republicans continued their cynical efforts to strip Americans of their fundamental freedoms and drag our country backwards. I recently joined my colleague Congressman Jared Huffman (D-CA) and other Democratic Members in organizing the “Stop Project 2025 Task Force” to make sure the American public is aware of these harmful policy ideas.

Project 2025 is a super creepy collection of policy goals written by close associates of former President Donald Trump. The document details plans to ban abortion nationwide, eliminate the Department of Education, and gut critical programs that Americans rely on like the National Weather Service. I am committed to stopping conservative extremists’ attacks on our way of life. Watch my full remarks from this week’s House Democratic Caucus Leadership press conference below.

PROTECTING VOTING ACCESS: This week, House Republicans brought the SAVE Act to the Floor. The bill’s supporters claim that this bill would make it illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. This proposal is duplicative and wasteful—it is already a crime for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and there is zero evidence of widespread voter fraud committed by noncitizens in federal elections.

In fact, the SAVE Act, if passed, would make it more difficult for Americans to register to vote. Most Americans would be unable to register using only their driver’s license or state-provided ID, including REAL IDs. Millions of Americans would be unable to register using their birth certificates to prove citizenship. Military and Tribal IDs would no longer suffice to register, raising barriers to voting for our servicemembers. For all of these reasons, I voted no on the SAVE Act.

I am pleased to support efforts to expand access to the ballot box and ensure every American has their voice heard at election time. That is why I am a cosponsor of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2023 and the Freedom to Vote Act, which would both address election integrity and expand voting access for Americans.
