There was a time when the Democrats hated corporate welfare. Now they can't shovel taxpayer money at big business fast enough.

Detroit News (7/11/24) reports: "The federal government is providing $1.7 billion in grants to help revitalize 11 shuttered or at-risk auto manufacturing and assembly facilities — including two in Michigan, the White House and Department of Energy said early Thursday. The grants will go to projects across eight states — Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia. Collectively, according to the Biden administration, the projects could result in the creation of 2,900 new jobs and the retention of 15,000 current ones. 'This investment will create thousands of good-paying, union manufacturing jobs and retain even more — from Lansing, Michigan to Fort Valley, Georgia — by helping auto companies retool, reboot, and rehire in the same factories and communities,' President Joe Biden said in a statement...All of the projects will in some way support a transition to low-emission vehicles — a top priority for Biden as a way to fight climate change and keep China from dominating the growing electric vehicle sector of the world auto market. That transition has proven challenging for automakers, though recent EV sales data were promising for some automakers like GM."

It's too bad we can't harness all that hot air from the "sustainable transition" crowd and turn it into electricity.

Errors of Enchantment (7/10/24) blog: "One of the great joys (and frustrations) of running the Rio Grande Foundation is laughing at environmental advocates who make audacious (and very non-specific) claims about 'transitioning' from oil and gas to some other basis for New Mexico’s economy (not to mention the world’s energy demands). The latest contestant in this game is Thomas Singer of the Western Environmental Law Center writing in the Albuquerque Journal. Singer (with degrees from Harvard, Stanford, and George Washington) accurately notes that New Mexico is poorly run (he fails to mention that it has been 'progressive' Democrats for decades) and too reliant on oil and gas, but his path to wean New Mexico off of oil and gas is laughable. His 'solutions include' some unspecified recommendations of the 'Sustainable Economy Task Force.'...The problem for these leftists is that REAL solutions to diversifying New Mexico’s economy are politically-unpalatable to the political left which is populated by so-called environmentalists like Singer. New Mexico COULD use its oil and gas wealth (including massive permanent funds) to reduce taxes and bring new businesses to the State, embrace educational choice to improve our lagging workforce, and embrace 'right to work' and other necessary, pro-free market labor reforms. Sadly, the only thing more unrealistic than the so-called 'energy transition' is the willingness of New Mexico’s left to reduce their control over New Mexico’s economy."

Center Square (5/1/24) reports: "New Jersey's plans to replace its fleet of diesel-powered buses with electric vehicles is getting a nearly $100 million boost from the federal government to upgrade a regional bus depot. The Federal Transit Administration announced this week that it has awarded New Jersey Transit a $99.5 million grant to modernize the 31-year-old Meadowlands Bus Garage in Secaucus to accommodate electric buses. The project includes installing charging equipment and constructing shelter and maintenance facilities...The Biden administration is pushing electric buses, with plans to divert $5 billion in funding earmarked for states and local governments, despite criticism that the expensive vehicles lack range and reliability...A recent report by the conservative Institute for Energy Research found electric buses are 'sitting unused as they are broken-down and either cannot be fixed, are too expensive to fix, or have been scrapped altogether'. 'EV buses cost multiple times more than their diesel counterparts, and their performance is marred by expensive and frequent repairs, charging equipment costs and much lower range than existing buses,' the report stated. 'Cities and school districts are left holding the bag, even as the Biden administration uses celebrity spokespeople like Vice President Kamala Harris and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to pitch Americans on them.'"
